Former Championship star Sam Parkin is 100 per cent certain that Middlesbrough will be promotion contenders next season if they make some key additions in the summer transfer window.

Middlesbrough’s faint hopes of getting into the playoffs ended on Monday night when they lost 4-3 to Leeds United at the Riverside Stadium.

Michael Carrick took them to the playoffs last season but this time around they are set to finish outside the top six.

Parkin believes Boro have quality in their squad but admitted that they are a bit short in certain areas at the moment.

He is confident that Carrick’s Middlesbrough side will again be in the reckoning for promotion if they bring in the right signings for the team.

The former Championship star said on the What The EFL Podcast: “I’d 100 per cent fancy Middlesbrough next year.

“With a few additions in the right departments because I think they were a little short.

“They could do with another wide player and another right-back.”

Middlesbrough will be travelling to Wales to take on Cardiff City on Saturday before ending the season with a home game against Watford at the Riverside Stadium on the final day of the campaign.
