Karim Benzema, who has been implicated in the sex scandal that has rocked French football, has received the backing of Real Madrid “at least for the moment”, according to Spanish paper Marca. Other football players involved in the pandering case include Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery, and Olympique Lyon’s Sidney Govou.

The three French internationals are being investigated after an anonymous judicial officer said a prostitute admitted to having relations with the three players. According to the woman, she was still a minor when she engaged in dealings with Benzema and Ribery, a violation that could see the two stars jailed for up to three years, and fined around €45,000.

The scandal has resulted in Los Blancos losing interest in prime target Franck Ribery, with Marca claiming Valencia’s David Silva has become the club’s priority. Karim Benzema, 22, has been given another season to prove himself however, despite a dismal first campaign at Real Madrid that saw him score a meagre eight goals in 28 appearances.
