Diego Forlan has been offered to Real Madrid for €18M according to Madrid based daily Marca. The offer did not come directly from Forlan’s club Atletico Madrid, but instead from an intermediary. Nevertheless, the news will be a big disappointment to Atletico fans.

It is not clear whether Los Blancos would be interested in the Uruguayan World Cup star, but the fee for which Forlan is available only comes to half his buy-out clause and is believed to be negotiable.

The news is likely to place Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus on alert; both are known to be monitoring Forlan having been impressed with his displays in South Africa. It is hard to envisage Real Madrid firming up any interest in the striker, however if Karim Benzema was to exit the Bernabeu in January, then Forlan would be a popular, proven, replacement.

The move does appear to open the door for Forlan to leave Quique Sanchez Flores’ team, probably in the January transfer window, and the coach is not thought to oppose the move.
