With Real Madrid’s win over Sporting Gijon in La Liga yesterday, Jose Mourinho surpassed one of Josep Guardiola’s records. Guardiola had held the record with his Barcelona side of clocking up the best league start for a rookie coach, however Mourinho has now overtaken the Spaniard.
Mourinho’s haul of 29 points from his first 11 La Liga games is more than Guardiola could manage. The Catalan picked up nine victories, as has Mourinho, but lost a single game, while Mourinho has drawn two of his 11.
The Portuguese however has been unable to celebrate his achievement from the bench, as he is currently serving a two-match ban for insulting the referee in Real Madrid’s 5-1 Copa del Rey thrashing of Real Murcia.
