Martin Jol’s decision to resign as Ajax coach has opened the door for club legend Frank de Boer to step into the dugout. The 40-year-old had been heading up the Amsterdam club’s reserve team and has immediately been drafted in as the Eredivisie side’s coach, albeit in a caretaker capacity.

For De Boer the opportunity is a big one, as the Dutchman has made no secret of his desire to succeed in his new coaching career. The former Barcelona defender has also acted as Holland’s assistant manager since 2008, and helped plot the Dutch’s progress to last summer’s World Cup final.

De Boer must now try and impress with Ajax and it would come as little surprise to see him confirmed as the club’s next permanent boss.
