Werder Bremen are stepping up their efforts to replace Hugo Almeida. The Portuguese striker departed Werder when the January transfer window opened, swapping Germany for Turkey to turn out for Istanbul giants Besiktas.

Now Almeida’s former Bundesliga side are working hard to bring in a replacement and have identified IF Elfsborg striker Denni Avdic. The 22-year-old, who is of Bosnian descent, but has represented Sweden at international level, turned heads with his performances in last year’s Allsvenskan, and is tipped for bigger things.

Under contract with Elfsborg until the end of 2011, Werder will no doubt have to make a substantial bid should they want to tempt Avdic to Germany.
