Aston Villa are battling with Fenerbahce for the signature of Lyon’s tough-tackling midfielder Jean Makoun.

Makoun is keen to leave the Ligue 1 club, although Lyon will only deal for the right price and have already rejected an offer of €5M from Aston Villa and €6.5M from Fenerbahce; the Stade Gerland outfit are reported to be looking for between €7-8M for the Cameroon international.

The 27-year-old’s contract with Lyon expires in 2012 and he has been forthright in his liking for a new challenge. Having played all his senior football in France, first with Lille before joining Lyon in 2008, Makoun is keen to experience a new league and country. In this, Villa are believed to have the edge, with the Cameroonian preferring to head to the Premier League.

A third club could yet get involved in the battle for Makoun though, with La Liga giants Sevilla keeping a close eye on developments. Such a situation suits Lyon, who are themselves keen to see a bidding war for their midfielder.
