Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has raised the prospect that his former club could have received more than £50M for Fernando Torres. The Spaniard gave a lengthy interview to the BBC’s Football Focus, where he revealed £70M for the striker had been mooted during his time in charge at the club.

"I think last year we were talking about £70M", said Benitez. "People were talking about maybe you receive an offer from another club. They were talking about £70M."

But Benitez also admitted that Torres had not been playing up to his previous form at Anfield, though the former Inter coach admitted he remains a fine player.

"He was not playing at the same level the last time, but he is still a very good player", commented the Spaniard. "It is big money, but could have been even better."

Benitez added that he would be open to a return to manage Liverpool at some point, but appreciates that Kenny Dalglish is doing a superb job.

"To be manager of Liverpool is a dream for me. This time, I know that Kenny is doing really well. I have to wait, keep watching the games, but if you say to me in the future would you like to be manager, for sure, no doubt about this."
