Valery Karpin has resigned as Spartak Moscow coach following the side’s weekend loss to Anzhi Makhachkala.

The former Celta Vigo man is set to remain at the club however as general manager, but the search for a new coach has begun.

Names instantly linked with the post include Louis van Gaal, who recently left Bayern Munich with more than a year remaining on his contract, and former Roma manager Claudio Ranieri.

Karpin leaves Spartak Moscow bottom of the first phase of Russia’s 2011/12 Premier League season.
