An unnamed club has offered Barcelona €18M for young midfielder Thiago Alcantara, leaving the European Champions considering whether the 20-year-old is dispensable.

Barcelona have been concentrating their efforts on signing both Cesc Fabregas from Arsenal and Alexis Sanchez from Udinese, although it is doubtful their summer transfer budget will stretch to both unless boosted by player sales.

Thiago Alcantara, often compared to team-mate Xavi, is already concerned about his first team prospects at the Camp Nou and this concern would only be increased if Fabregas were to arrive.

The 20-year-old has recently excelled at the European Under-21 Championship in Denmark, a competition Spain won by beating Switzerland 2-0 in the final last night. And this has served only to increase the midfielder’s army of admirers.

And Barcelona are well aware they could realise a fee of close to €20M at a stroke, but are still reluctant to part with another product of their famous academy.
