Arsenal will not have a free run at signing midfielder Esteban Granero from Real Madrid in the January transfer window after the Spaniard was eyed by Roma.

The Giallorossi are led by former Barcelona B coach Luis Enrique who, through his vast contacts in his homeland, has become aware of Granero’s potential availability.

Granero is known to be on Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s shopping list after struggling with the level of competition for a starting spot at the Bernabeu.

A highly technical player, hugely adept at picking a pass, it is no surprise that the 24-year-old is wanted by two clubs who seek to play possession football.

Granero could also be offered the opportunity to remain in Spain too, with Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini pondering joining the race.

What is certain though is that the midfielder will be allowed to leave Jose Mourinho’s side for the right price.

A product of Real Madrid’s esteemed youth academy, the Spaniard spent two years with Getafe before returning to the Bernabeu for €4M in 2009.

Los Blancos will want much more than that to release him for a second time however.
