The agent of Udinese star Gabriel Torje has confirmed that Arsenal have asked about signing his client.

Torje has been nicknamed the "Romanian Lionel Messi" in an admission of his tricky brilliance and the 22-year-old’s progress has been impressive in Serie A.

Scouts have been in regular attendance at Udinese’s games in order to keep tabs on Torje and speculation over a move in the winter transfer window or next summer has picked up pace.

Arsenal have long been considered to be close to the front of the queue for the Romanian and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is believed to be a big fan of the winger.

And thus it comes as little surprise that the English giants have taken soundings over Torje’s availability.

"Yes, it’s true Arsenal like him", the player’s agent Giovani Becali told Calcio Mercato.

"There’s nothing official. We can say that there have been talks, even when the player does not move."

It was also suggested that Arsenal are lining up a bid for January or next summer, and the Udinese star’s agent was firm in his belief that a winter move is not a possibility, while holding the door open for June.

"In January there is no chance that he moves. For June, we’ll see.

"However, it’s clear that the player is happy in Udine."

Torje is under contract with Udinese until 2016, having only signed a five-year deal with the Italian clubs after being snapped up from Dinamo Bucharest.
