Arsenal target Nick Powell has been warned against quitting Crewe Alexandra for the Premier League in the January transfer window.

The talented 17-year-old midfielder is known to be on Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger’s radar, with the Gunners alive to his undoubted talents – and a bid in the new year has been mooted.

Powell has stepped up his performances for Crewe in League Two of late, starring in a side that have won their last two games under new boss Steve Davis, who succeeded long-serving Dario Gradi at the start of November.

Davis rates Powell highly and the former Nantwich Town manager is well aware that the eyes of many a Premier League scout are being cast over the starlet.

But a move to the Emirates Stadium, where the 17-year-old would undoubtedly be welcomed, or anywhere else for that matter, is something Davis believes should be put on hold for now.

"There is no point in Nick going to a higher club to play in their reserves because I see that as a backwards step"
, Davis told the Crewe Guardian.

"He needs to play first team games and progress in the right way.

"Hopefully then he’ll reach a point when he is ready to push on and get into the first team at a club a lot higher than Crewe.

"In terms of his development, this is the best place for him at the moment."

Powell has represented England at Under-16 and Under-17 level and, along with fellow 17-year-old Max Clayton, is rated as Crewe’s most exciting young talent.

Should Arsenal firm up their interest, Powell will no doubt be tempted by the prospect of working under Arsene Wenger, despite boss Steve Davis’ desire for him to remain at Gresty Road.
