Arsenal are believed to be running the rule over Anderlecht’s highly rated forward Matias Suarez.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is well aware of his side’s need for further arrivals in the January transfer window, particularly in the final third of the pitch, with Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho set to head to the African Cup of Nations.

The Frenchman will not be pushed into opening his wallet, but could be tempted if a deal can quickly be done for Suarez and if the Argentine is deemed to fit the bill.

Also in Wenger’s thoughts is the fitness of Robin van Persie.

While the Dutchman is firing on all cylinders at present, the Arsenal manager would like to be able to rest the 28-year-old at times in the new year and is wary of starting him in every game.

The addition of Suarez would allow Wenger to take Van Persie out of the firing line on occasion.

And Arsenal are scouting the forward – the Gunners will have observed a fiercely skilled hitman who has scored seven times in the Belgian top flight and also found the back of the net the same number of times in the Europa League this season, making him that competition’s top scorer.

Anderlecht would be reluctant to lose Suarez, especially with Romelu Lukaku having departed for Chelsea over the summer, but a substantial bid could cause a rethink.
