Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku’s father has slammed the Belgian media for not being understanding about his son’s time at Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku moved to Chelsea in the summer from Jupiler Pro League giants Anderlecht and has been singled out as a great striking hope for the Belgian national team.

The country’s footballing community and press are desperate for Lukaku to play for the Blues, but Roger Lukaku, the player’s father, well understands that the path towards a spot in Andre Villas-Boas’ starting eleven will be a winding one, full of gradual progress and development.

And Lukaku senior has blasted the Belgian press for not understanding this in the way the French once did when Karim Benzema first moved to Real Madrid.

"We knew that the transfer of Romelu was one for the future", said Roger Lukaku.

"He was not going to be the star of the team. Remember: Fernando Torres, who cost €58M, has also been sitting on the bench. Romelu still has to learn", he added.

Lukaku senior also expressed his view that the Belgian press do not appreciate the striker’s situation or protect him as they should.

"I have the impression that Belgian journalists do not understand that Romelu is young and happy to learn.

"The French protected Benzema.

"Take Benzema, not that I would compare him with my son, but their situation is similar. When he was struggling to break through at Real Madrid, the French journalists never wrote about it, even if the Spanish did.

"The French protected him because they knew they would need him in the national team. Here it’s the opposite. The Belgians have no understanding of Romelu’s situation, while the English understand that he’s a player of potential."
