English Premier League outfit Newcastle United have already made a bid for Lyon left back Aly Cissokho ahead of the official opening of the winter transfer window, according to French radio station RMC.

The Magpies were interested in Cissokho over the summer, but Les Gones’ asking price forced Alan Pardew’s men to look elsewhere, and Italian Davide Santon was eventually snapped up from Inter.

However, Newcastle have never completely crossed the 24-year-old off their list of potential acquisitions and the athletic all-action Cissokho is considered perfectly suited to English football.

Lyon have a budget shortfall to make up in 2012 and that is likely to see several players sold – the French giants need to generate at least €15M in sales and chop their wage bill in the process.

Les Gones president Jean-Michel Aulas is thought to want a minimum of €10M for Cissokho, while Newcastle have offered an amount of between €7M and €8M.

The former FC Porto man has been vocal over his desire to move to England at some point and should Lyon and Newcastle be able to find common ground, Cissokho would surely jump at the chance to head to St. James’ Park.
