Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has confirmed that he will try to sign Daniele De Rossi from Roma if the Giallorossi are open to an approach.

De Rossi’s contract with the Italian giants expires at the end of the current season and so far no new deal has been able to be agreed between club and player.

Mancini rates the Azzurri star highly and his midfield talents would provide the former Inter coach with perfect cover for Yaya Toure, who is set to depart for the African Cup of Nations.

But while Mancini wants De Rossi, he will only bid if there is a realistic chance of success.

"He is a winner and he would be the perfect man to strengthen City", said the Citizens manager.

"We will certainly try for him, but we must get the right signals from Roma.

"There’s no sense in us making a move if they don’t want to let him go, so that’s the question."

De Rossi is an icon at Roma and the 28-year-old has never played senior football for any other club.
