Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has fixed his eyes on Valencia defender Jordi Alba, but may have to battle Barcelona for the Spanish international.

The 22-year-old has impressed Ferguson with his versatility, with the Spaniard able to operate both at the back and also in a midfield role on the left flank.

Valencia have continued to hand Alba the starts needed to continue his progression in an upward curve and will be reluctant to lose the services of a man tipped to soon become Spain’s first choice left back.

Indeed, Los Che are known to view keeping the former Barcelona youth player as essential in their continuing battle to remain as La Liga’s third best side and also ensure regular Champions League football.

Ferguson though could test that desire with a substantial bid for the defender.

Alba has been earmarked as a potential successor to current Manchester United left back Patrice Evra, who will turn 31 before the end of the current campaign.

The English champions are not the only club showing an interest in Alba however, as sources in Catalonia have confirmed Barcelona are continuing to monitor the player’s situation.

The left back is currently negotiating with Valencia over a new contract, which he appears in no rush to sign; given any indication that those talks are running less than smoothly, Josep Guardiola’s men will bid to take Alba back to the Camp Nou.

Such a move would represent a remarkable turnaround for a player who was deemed too small to succeed when in the Catalan club’s youth ranks.
