Left back Aly Cissokho is believed to be on the verge of moving from Lyon to English Premier League outfit Newcastle United.

The 24-year-old has been left out of Lyon’s squad for the trip to face Montpellier in Ligue 1 this weekend, and while officially this is due to muscle pain, sources in France have revealed that Cissokho is in fact on his way to the North East of England.

There the defender is expected to undergo a medical with a view to completing a €9M switch to Newcastle.

Cissokho is keen to make the move and Les Gones must sell in the current window to cover a budget shortfall.

Lyon had been looking for a minimum of €10M for the former FC Porto star, but appear to have relented and will accept €9M.

Newcastle’s proactive approach should end nascent interest from fellow English club Arsenal, who have recently began to speak with Lyon over the possibility of Cissokho moving to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners will have to move quickly if they are to scupper Cissokho’s Magpies switch.
