Real Madrid are considering allowing Pepe to leave following yet another incident which has not reflected favourably on the Spanish giants – and this has put Chelsea on red alert.

Pepe appeared to stamp on Barcelona star Lionel Messi’s hand during the midweek Copa del Rey clash at the Bernabeu, an incident that left the Argentine wizard in much pain.

The reaction against Pepe within Spain and outside it was instant, with condemnation coming from all corners. Indeed, even Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney got in on the act by branding the Portuguese defender "an idiot".

The Real Madrid stopper has since apologised to Messi, but insisted the stamp was not intentional.

Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho however has suggested that the defender could be punished by the club if that is not judged to be the case.

And now sources around Real Madrid are suggesting the Spanish giants may have had enough of Pepe and could be willing to make him available for transfer.

This is thought to have piqued the interest of Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas, who is a fan of the tough tackling centre back.

Villas-Boas would jump at the chance to take Pepe to Stamford Bridge, though it remains to be seen whether Real Madrid really are prepared to call time on his career at the Bernabeu.
