La Liga outfit Real Mallorca are exploring the possibility of swooping for Everton defender John Heitinga.

The Dutch stopper has experience of La Liga, having turned out for Atletico Madrid before moving to Goodison Park in 2009.

And Mallorca have remembered the 28-year-old when plotting how to strengthen their defence in the current transfer window.

Sources in Spain have reported that the island club have already made contact with Heitinga’s representatives in the hope of negotiating a deal.

Mallorca currently sit 14th in La Liga and have shipped 24 goals this season. When combined with just 17 scored, this spells trouble for the club and a relegation battle is looming.

Whether Heitinga would be tempted by the chance to move back to Spain is unclear, but should Mallorca place a substantial bid in front of Everton then the Toffees, who have suffered a financial malaise, may wish to cash in on the Dutchman.

The former Ajax man is under contract with Everton until 2014.
