Ajax coach Frank de Boer has admitted he would be open to the possibility of a BeNeLiga, a joint Belgian and Dutch league.

Standard Liege president Roland Duchatelet has called for the creation of the league to bridge the gap between Dutch and Belgian clubs and the rest of Europe, with the hope being that there would be increased interest leading to increased income from TV rights.

The move would echo one made in women’s football in the region, where a BeNeLiga is a reality.

And it is something De Boer will not dismiss.

"If the level goes up and this helps to close the gap to the summit, then I applaud it", said the Ajax boss.

"But it is also up to the KNVB (Dutch FA) to make a judgement."

De Boer will not complain about Holland’s Eredivisie though, which he feels is a very competitive and exciting league.

"We’ve fought for the title for the last few years with four clubs, it’s very exciting. I’m satisfied with the Eredivisie, where we’re currently not finding it so easy."

Ajax sit sixth in this season’s Dutch top flight.
