PSV Eindhoven have appointed Philip Cocu as coach until the end of the season after parting company with Fred Rutten.

Rutten has paid the price for a poor run of three consecutive defeats which included a 6-2 drubbing at home to FC Twente, a 4-2 loss at Valencia in the first leg of the club’s Europa League Round of 16 tie and then at the weekend, going down 3-1 away at NAC Breda.

PSV remain just four points off the Eredivisie summit – but the club’s board felt the need to act as the side’s form was beginning to turn.

And the Eindhoven outfit have turned to Cocu to steady the ship.

The 41-year-old former midfielder, who enjoyed a six-year playing spell at Barcelona, has served as assistant coach at PSV since 2009.

Cocu called time on his playing career just one year before, following a stint with Al Jazira in the Middle East.

He will now look to put PSV back in the driving seat with his first task overturning a two-goal deficit in the Europa League against Valencia on Thursday.
