Schalke striker Raul is the latest big name player to be linked with a move to wealthy Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala.

According to sources in Spain, Anzhi Makhachkala sporting director Roberto Carlos has been asked by the Russian outfit’s coach, Guus Hiddink, to sound out Raul over a switch to the Dagestan giants.

Roberto Carlos knows Raul well from his long stint playing alongside the Spaniard at Real Madrid and the two have remained friends, while Hiddink coached the forward at the Bernabeu in the 1998/99 campaign.

The 34-year-old’s future at Schalke is not entirely clear, with his current contract due to expire at the end of the season and no new deal having yet been signed.

Raul then could be available without a fee needing to be paid and the striker would be well compensated if he chose to move to Russia.

The Spaniard has clocked up 11 goals in 24 Bundesliga games so far this season and Schalke’s fans have taken him to their hearts.
