AZ Alkmaar have placed a series of clubs on alert after admitting that, should Rasmus Elm not sign a new contract at the club, he will have to be sold this summer.

The 24-year-old Swedish midfielder has been in impressive form for AZ this season and has been proclaimed as one of the brightest talents in Dutch football.

A number of sides have scouted Elm throughout this campaign, including Manchester United, Valencia, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

And with the midfielder’s contract due to expire in 2013, there is every chance he could be on the move this summer if an extension is not penned, a fact which has been confirmed by AZ technical director Earnest Stewart.

"His contract expires next year and we can’t afford to have Rasmus leave on a free transfer", said Stewart to Voetbal International, admitting that a sale may be on the agenda, even if talks are underway.

"It goes without saying that we want to keep him for longer. We are already talking to each other, but the birth of his daughter saw them postponed.

"Despite all the interest in Rasmus, I really hope he just stays at AZ."

Elm has played 30 times in the Eredivisie this season, scoring ten goals and providing nine assists.
