Ajax star Jan Vertonghen lifted the Dutch title last night, and then declared the chances of his remaining at the Amsterdam ArenA for next season to be slim.

Club captain Vertonghen had the pleasure of hoisting the title shield above his head after a 2-0 victory was recorded at home to VVV-Venlo.

But the Belgian stopper, who has been heavily linked with a switch to the English Premier League all season, most notably Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, does not look set to help Frank de Boer’s men defend their crown.

"We’ve won our 13th game in a row", said Vertonghen after the match.

"We showed that we can chase and now we have shown we can hold onto a lead", he added, before answering questions over his future.

"The chances are that I will be leaving", he said, "but you never know."

Vertonghen has just one more year left to run on his contract – yet another reason why Ajax are ready to cash in.

The defender has made 29 Eredivisie appearances this season.
