Manchester United have agreed a fee with Crewe Alexandra for talented forward Nick Powell, according to the Crewe Chronicle.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been keen on the 18-year-old for some time and was a visitor to Gresty Road to watch Powell in action as he powered the Alex’s surge up the League Two table.

Crewe ultimately made the League Two playoff final against Cheltenham Town and the big occasion did not faze Powell, who scored a wonder strike in his side’s 2-0 win.

Manchester United moved quickly following Crewe’s promotion to open talks with the Railwaymen and a fee has now been agreed between the two clubs.

Powell will cost Ferguson’s side an initial £4M with a further £2M possible through a series of add-ons, meaning Crewe could pocket up to £6M for their academy product.

Personal terms between Powell and Manchester United are now taking place as the final piece of the jigsaw is slotted in to make the move a reality.

Powell was Crewe’s top scorer last season and the club had been realistic over their chances of keeping hold of a player who had Premier League scouts flocking to Gresty Road.

It is unclear whether Powell will be loaned back to the Alex for next season, though it appears unlikely, with Ferguson wanting to begin to school the forward in the Manchester United way.
