Paris Saint-Germain were ready to pay €53M for FC Porto striker Hulk, but were rebuffed by the Brazilian, who has his heart set on Chelsea, according to sources in France.

The Ligue 1 club’s sporting director Leonardo was keen to take Hulk to the Parc des Princes and had prepared a bid of some €53M in order to force Porto’s hand and also blow the player’s other suitors out of the water.

But it was to no avail, as Hulk has already settled on joining the Champions League winners at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are not prepared to go above €50M for the 25-year-old and Porto would undoubtedly have jumped at the chance to realise a larger fee by shipping the goal-getter off to France.

French football though does not have the lure of the English Premier League and, despite the riches on offer at PSG, a club backed by the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar, the deal looks dead.

Hulk is thought to have been earmarked as Chelsea’s replacement for Didier Drogba, who ended an association of eight years with the Blues last month.

Drogba is expected to sign for Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua on a deal worth a whopping €248,000 per week.

That will be more even than Nicolas Anelka takes home at the Blue Devil. The Frenchman picks up €230,000 every seven days for his troubles.
