Genuine Belief

Going into Euro 2012, expectations for England were at an all-time low. The country had flopped badly at the 2010 World Cup, struggling to beat even the most average of opposition before being taught a lesson by Germany, while manager Roy Hodgson was handed the reins just weeks before this summer’s tournament. And with a group containing France, co-hosts Ukraine and dark horses Sweden, optimism was mooted and realism reigned.

However, that has been flipped on its head. Winning Group D, no matter that it was not pretty and England averaged only 23% ball possession, has filled the country and team with confidence. Now losing the quarter-final to Italy would be a disappointment. A semi-final against Germany is openly talked about – and in some sections of England’s media, the subject for discussion centres around just three more victories needed to win Euro 2012.

With Wayne Rooney back and having looked sharp against Ukraine, combined with real defensive solidity, hopes are high that Italy can be beaten, even if there is still respect for the Azzurri in the Three Lions camp.

"In previous tournaments we just haven’t shown what we are capable of. But our performances are getting stronger in this competition", said captain Steven Gerrard. "That is what gives me the belief and confidence that we can end this hoodoo that people talk about."

Wary of Copycat Opponents

In Italy there is a sense that the match against England could see a dramatic role reversal. The Azzurri have always been built on a defensive game with counter attacking as the main weapon to win contests. Now coach Cesare Prandelli is adopting a more attacking and open approach, with a 3-4-1-2 formation the order of the day. England however are seen as a throwback to Italy of the 1980s; a solid defence, a classic 4-4-2 formation, and a grinding out of wins without pretty football.

Prandelli’s men are quietly confident that their new-found style should trump England’s reluctance to throw men forward. Dominating possession would suit the Azzurri fine, especially if Andrea Pirlo is afforded the time and space to carve open the English defence. And while Prandelli accepts his side are not the strongest at Euro 2012, he places real faith in Italy’s new approach.

"We’re not the strongest side in the tournament but we’re very determined. Over the last few years we’ve tried to change how we play; we’ve done well so far but now we want to win these big games. We only need a little bit to make that leap in quality", commented the Azzurri coach.

Players to watch

England – Steven Gerrard: The captain has been England’s standout player so far at Euro 2012 and he will have the most important job of the night against Italy. Gerrard must break up Italy’s play and not allow the Azzurri, and Pirlo especially, to open up England’s backline.

Italy – Mario Balotelli: England know all about Balotelli from his displays in the Premier League with Manchester City. The Italian is his country’s most potent weapon up front and has the ability to do the unpredictable. The Azzurri will look to Balotelli to take his chances.

Match Prediction

England and Italy are both confident they have enough to come through this Euro 2012 quarter-final, though each accept it looks likely to be a close contest. Hodgson’s men are unlikely to change their style, just as Prandelli’s team will not and it should be a fascinating battle. Expect extra time and Italy to edge it. England 0-1 Italy.
