Arsenal captain and talisman Robin van Persie has announced through his website that he will not be extending his contract with the club. The contract ends in June 2013 and it is expected that the Gunners will now want to cash in on their star man, even though the club’s management had recently assured the fans that they would not sell the player at any price; the Gunners are thought to have recently rejected a bid from Juventus.

After the departure of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri last summer, Arsenal depended heavily on the services of Van Persie and he delivered. The Gunners captain was tremendous last season and single handedly steered the London-based club to a Champions League spot by scoring 30 crucial goals in the Premier League.

There was genuine hope amongst Arsenal fans and the management that the Gunners captain would extend a contract with the club that runs out next summer. However, the Dutch striker has now broken the hearts of fans by announcing his decision to not sign a new deal.

Van Persie announced his decision through his official website.

“I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract. You guys, the fans, have of course the right to disagree with my view and decision and I will always respect your opinions”, said the Dutchman.

The left-footed striker stressed that money was never the problem for him and explained that there were differences in opinion between him and the club’s management about how Arsenal should move forward. The striker said that he wanted the side to show ambition so that he can win trophies with Arsenal, but was disappointed with how the management responded to his pleas.

“This was a meeting about the club’s future strategy and their policy. Financial terms or a contract have not been discussed, since that is not my priority at all”, he said. “Out of my huge respect for Mr. Wenger, the players and the fans I don’t want to go into any details, but unfortunately in this meeting it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward.”

Following this statement, it remains to be seen whether Wenger will make Van Persie run down his contract or whether he will cash in on his rebel superstar. If Arsenal decide to sell, Juventus and Manchester City will be the two most likely destinations for the 28-year old.
