Al Wasl have sacked Diego Maradona as the club’s coach.

Maradona had come under considerable pressure at the United Arab Emirates outfit as the side could only manage a finish of eighth in the 12-team top flight last season.

It is not known why Al Wasl have called time on the Argentine’s reign, but the club did recently fail to win the final of the GCC Champions League, slipping to a defeat against Bahrain-based side Al Muharraq despite holding a 3-1 first leg lead.

"Following a meeting of the board of directors of Al Wasl Fooball Company (AWFC) held today, to evaluate the technical staff of Al Wasl Football Team under the leadership of coach Diego Maradona, it was decided to terminate the services of coach Diego Maradona and his technical staff", read a statement released by Al Wasl.

Maradona took charge of the club in May 2011.

His previous job was as coach of the Argentina national team.
