Liverpool are chasing Athletic Bilbao star Fernando Amorebieta, according to the player’s management team.

The 27-year-old centre back is a wanted man this summer, in part owing to having just one year left on his current contract at the San Mames.

Amorebieta is loyal to the Basque outfit however and there is an expectation that he will agree to put pen to paper on a new deal; his head could still be turned though and especially by English giants Liverpool, who could hope to secure him for a knockdown fee.

“Several teams are interested, but Liverpool the most”, the player’s management agency told Spanish daily Marca.

However, they also sought to defuse worries about losing Amorebieta for the Basque club’s fans.

“There is a clear desire from the player to extend his contract and even finish his career at the San Mames.

“But his good campaign has meant that several sides are interested in him and one of them is Liverpool.”

Talks over extending the Venezuela star’s contract with Athletic Bilbao are indeed continuing, although the interest of a number of clubs will increase the pressure on the Basques to find an agreement Amorebieta is satisfied with.

“Right now the situation is that Fernando wants to continue and Athletic want him to continue.

“The club have made an offer and we have responded. We are now at the stage of looking at the proposals that are there from the two parties. Everything is still open.”

Amorebieta is a product of Athletic Bilbao’s youth system and has represented Spain at under-19 level.

However, at senior international level the defender opted to turn out for Venezuela, making his debut for the South American country in 2011.
