Former Liverpool midfielder Christian Poulsen is on the verge of inking a two-year contract with Dutch giants Ajax after parting ways with Evian.

Poulsen landed at the Ligue 1 outfit last summer after an underwhelming spell at Anfield, but chose not to extend his one-year stay in France.

Now the 32-year-old is set to land at the Amsterdam ArenA and pen a contract with the Dutch champions, replacing Vurnon Anita, who recently left Frank de Boer’s men to sign for Newcastle United.

It is a prospect which has delighted the defensive midfielder – and he already knows what role he will be required to play.

"Ajax are renowned for always having a very young team, but now something is missing in the squad because the most experienced players left", Poulsen told Ekstra Bladet.

"I am really pleased with this transfer, but it is not completely done.

"It is at least a two-year contract."

Poulsen has played for some of the biggest clubs in Europe, with spells at Sevilla and Juventus, in addition to his time at Liverpool.

He recently announced his retirement from international football.
