Javi Martinez appears to be on the brink of joining Bayern Munich in a deal which will net Athletic Bilbao some €40M.

The Bavarians have been desperate to sign the Spain international before the transfer window slams shut, even at the price of paying Martinez’ release clause of €40M.

Now Jupp Heynckes’ side are close to getting their man after Martinez was pictured in Germany at Bayern Munich’s offices and German daily Bild suggested a deal is imminent.

Martinez is not travelling with his team-mates to Finland for Athletic Bilbao’s Europa League qualifier against HJK Helsinki tomorrow, in a further sign that his time at the San Mames is nearing its end.

Having lost two successive Bundesliga titles to Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich have become convinced that the 23-year-old Spain international is the missing piece in their jigsaw.

And it is for that reason that the Bavarians will pay a mammoth €40M to secure Martinez, an amount which serves as a statement of intent for the rest of the Bundesliga.

Athletic Bilbao have stuck stubbornly to Martinez’ buy-out clause as the price Bayern Munich must pay, as they battled to keep hold of the Osasuna youth product.
