Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna has admitted that the summer transfer window departure of Alex Song, hot on the heels of selling Robin van Persie, concerned him.

Sagna insists that he was fully prepared for Van Persie to leave the Emirates Stadium, but the transfer of Song to Barcelona was unexpected and unwelcome.

And that, added to the loss of Van Persie, is a blow to the Gunners in the 29-year-old’s opinion, and one which he does not understand from a club which is supposed to be aiming to challenge for the Premier League title.

"I expected Robin’s departure", the France international told French sports daily L’Equipe.

"But Alex was a surprise", he added.

"He is 24 and had three years left on his contract."

For Sagna, the departures of Van Persie and Song have undoubtedly seen the Gunners bid farewell to their two finest players – a worrying sign.

"When you see your two best players from last season leave, you ask yourself questions", stressed the defender.

Sagna joined the Gunners in 2007 from French outfit Auxerre.

He is currently out of action, still recovering from a broken leg sustained against Norwich City last season.

The Frenchman’s Arsenal contract runs until 2014.
