Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Manchester United have a burning ambition to add to the number of European Cups they have won.

Despite dominating English football for the last 20 years, the Red Devils have managed to only add two more European Cups to their trophy cabinet – in 1999 and 2008 – a figure which translates into just one for every decade of success.

That places Manchester United behind Barcelona (four times winners), Bayern Munich (four times winners), Liverpool (five times winners), AC Milan (seven times winners) and Real Madrid (nine times winners).

And that is a league table Ferguson is determined for his side to climb up, something they failed to do last season, when crashing out in the Champions League group stage.

The Manchester United manager is supremely confident that this year will be different.

"We’ve had opportunities in the competition. We’ve lost two finals to Barcelona and won two in the last decade or so but we want to do better. Certainly, we’ll do better than last year – no question about that", the Scot told Manchester United’s official site.

"The European Cup is incredible. There’s an atmosphere in the build-up to a European final and great charisma about it", he continued.

"Also, without question, it elevates your status within the game like the Real Madrids and AC Milans.

"We want to be up there in terms of the number of trophies won in European football."

Manchester United have been handed what looks to be a relatively straightforward group for this edition, with Galatasaray, Cluj and Braga set to provide the opposition.
