Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis has insisted that young striker Max Clayton will be kept by the League One side, despite growing interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

Scouts have been flocking to Gresty Road to take in the 18-year-old’s performances and most recently Tottenham Hotspur were widely linked with launching a swoop.

relatedNewsStoryHowever, after bidding farewell to forward Nick Powell, who was sold to Manchester United in the summer, Davis is not ready to part with another gem just yet.

And the former Nantwich Town boss is sure it is essential for Clayton to continue to grow with the Alex.

"Max doesn’t take much notice of the speculation and neither do we", Davis told his club’s official site, insisting Clayton will not be distracted.

"He is still finding his feet with us and learning his trade here.

"We don’t want him to go and be part of some club’s development squad, we want him to be ready to go into a first-team squad.

"He is playing first team here and developing with us."

Clayton was in action for Crewe yesterday, as the Alex went down 2-0 at Fratton Park against Portsmouth.

The striker has managed just one goal in League One so far this season, although he did get on the scoresheet last week in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash against Shrewsbury.
