Chelsea have gained revenge over Manchester United for losing to the Red Devils 3-2 in the Premier League at the weekend.

Roberto Di Matteo’s men put Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to the sword in a pulsating League Cup encounter, coming out on top 5-4 after extra time to book a spot in the competition’s quarter-finals.

Both sides made changes to their teams from the Premier League meeting, but kept a strong core of first team stars.

Chelsea’s strength in depth was clear for all to see, but the Blues fell behind to a Ryan Giggs goal for the visitors in the 22nd minute, before David Luiz levelled the match from the spot barely ten minutes later.

A defensive error then allowed Mexican striker Javier Hernandez to put Manchester United 2-1 up at half time, before Chelsea struck back early in the second half.

Defender Gary Cahill equalised (52nd minute) but Nani then handed the visitors the lead again.

And in the additional time to be played Chelsea made their attacking power pay.

First Daniel Sturridge found the back of the net (97 minutes), before Brazilian Ramires added another (116 minutes), making it 5-3 to the Blues.

Manchester United did claim a consolation, with Giggs scoring in the 120th minute, but it was too little too late and Chelsea progressed.
