Anzhi Makhachkala will battle Manchester United for the signature of Inter schemer Wesley Sneijder in January, according to Russian daily Izvestia.

Sneijder is moving closer towards leaving the Nerazzurri, with a further step taken just last week as the Italian giants proposed the 28-year-old take a pay cut to sign a new contract.

At present Sneijder earns around €6M per year at Inter, but sources in Italy suggest that the Nerazzurri want to chop that amount to €4M in a new deal for the player.

The Dutchman is currently sidelined with injury, but is expected to return to action within the next four weeks.

That will give Sneijder just enough time to prove his fitness and impress his suitors, of which there are no shortage.

The most serious interest comes from English Premier League giants Manchester United, who have tried to take the former Real Madrid man to Old Trafford previously, and wealthy Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.

Guus Hiddink's men are well aware that they are likely to have to battle the Red Devils for Sneijder, but are prepared to outbid Sir Alex Ferguson's men.

relatedNewsStoryAnzhi Makhachkala also hope that the good relationship forged with Inter through the transfer of Samuel Eto'o in the summer of 2011 can aid their cause.

However, it is not known how open Sneijder is towards moving to Russia.

Sneijder has managed five appearances in Serie A this season, scoring once.

He joined the club in 2009 from Real Madrid.
