Lewis Holtby is looking for a lucrative offer to renew his contract at Schalke, which the German side may struggle to meet, opening the door for a switch away, according to Calcio Mercato.

Italian giants Inter are reported to have been alerted to the fact that the 22-year-old wants around €6M per year, which Schalke are unlikely to pay. However, the news is also likely to interest Arsenal and Liverpool, who have both been strongly linked with the midfielder.

Holtby’s current contract at Schalke expires next summer and the Ruhr club have indicated that they are stepping up negotiations with the midfielder and his team-mate Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, with a view to extending the deals of both players.

But should Holtby ask for €6M per year, Schalke would almost certainly be placed in a difficult position, and Huub Stevens’ men are unlikely to be able to push the boat out to such an extent.

Holtby has continued the make an impact in Gelsenkirchen this season and his agent has claimed that offers are on the table for his client from clubs in England and Spain.

The player is also keen to play in the English Premier League, with his father hailing from England.

It remains to be seen whether Holtby will stick to a €6M per year demand, or how Schalke might react.

Holtby joined Schalke in 2009 from Alemannia Aachen.
