Newcastle United have abandoned the idea of signing Saint-Etienne striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this month, according to beINSport.

The Magpies have been raiding French football as they bid to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season.

Mathieu Debuchy, Massaido Haidara, Moussa Sissoko, Yoan Gouffran and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa have all landed at St. James’ Park, bidding farewell to Ligue 1.

And Saint-Etienne striker Aubameyang was also on the Magpies’ hit list.

But now Alan Pardew’s men have called time on their winter window activity in France and the 23-year-old will not be moving to St. James’ Park.

It remains to be seen if the Magpies will be active elsewhere, with Sporting Lisbon forward Ricky van Wolfswinkel having been mooted as a potential target.

Saint-Etienne will be delighted that they do not have to fend off an approach from the English side for Aubameyang however.
