Chelsea hold an interest in Marseille’s highly rated defender Nicolas N’Koulou.

According to Mercato 365, the European champions sent a scout to watch the 22-year-old defender in action for Marseille against Rennes yesterday.

N’Koulou clocked up 90 minutes for Elie Baup’s men in the Ligue 1 clash, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

The centre-back, who represents Cameroon at international level, is rated as Marseille’s brightest defensive talent and has been tipped for big things.

N’Koulou is not short of admirers, having been tracked by AC Milan and Manchester City over the last six months.

The defender was snapped up by Marseille in the summer of 2011 from fellow French side Monaco.

His importance to the Stade Velodrome outfit has been clearly shown by the fact that Marseille have not been willing to listen to offers for the defender, even as the need for budget cuts has forced a number of other players to be sold.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea will firm up their interest in N’Koulou, but the Blues could slap in a tempting offer, perhaps as soon as the summer transfer window.
