Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas has explained his decision not to give Hugo Lloris the spot between the sticks against his former club Lyon this evening.

Lyon visit White Hart Lane for the first leg of a Europa League Round of 32 tie against Villas-Boas’ men and it had been thought that Lloris would have the opportunity to play against the side he left to join Spurs last summer.

But Villas-Boas has disappointed the Frenchman by continuing with his policy of playing number 2 shot-stopper Brad Friedel in European games.

The situation had been reversed when Lloris was overlooked for Premier League games.

"It happened when Hugo was not playing in the Premier League at the time", explained Villas-Boas, via Maxifoot, pointing out why Lloris played in the Europa League earlier this season.

"At the time, he played in the Europa League – it’s Brad Friedel’s turn now.

"It is important to look at what we have done and said, even though I know the feelings Hugo may have about this."

Lyon will surely welcome the omission of Lloris, a player considered to be the best French goalkeeper in the game today.

For the 26-year-old though, missing out is a disappointment.
