English Premier League club Reading have confirmed the appointment of former Southampton boss Nigel Adkins as the new first team manager of the club, and his contract runs until the summer of 2016.

Adkins, 48, has replaced former manager Brian McDermott, after he lost his job on 11th March this year, owing to poor Premier League form.

“Adkins is the right man for Reading; he comes to the Madejski Stadium with great experience, a winning mentality, the ability to develop and improve players – especially youngsters”, the official club statement read.

The former Southampton boss led the Saints to back-to-back promotions to the Championship in 2011 and the Premier League last year.

“There’s a great spirit here among the players and I’m looking forward to the first game at Arsenal on Sunday”, Adkins said in a press conference via his club’s feed, moments after being appointed the new role.

Reading are now currently struggling in the relegation zone with 23 points and are second bottom of the Premier League, with eight games left.

Adkins’ first game with the Royals will be a challenging one as they travel to take on Arsenal before locking horns with the new manager’s old club in Southampton.
