Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has revealed he could not sleep when news of Mario Gotze’s move to Bayern Munich emerged, insisting it is different to when the club lost Shinji Kagawa last year.

Gotze has agreed to join the Bavarians in the summer after they activated his €37M release clause at the Ruhr giants.

Losing Gotze is a blow for Jurgen Klopp’s men and Hummels readily admits that he could not sleep when he heard the news, so concerned was he about losing the attacking midfielder to the club’s chief Bundesliga rivals.

"He is already among the best ten players in the world, so it was a shock for us", the centre-back told Sky Deutschland.

"I hardly slept the night I heard about it.

"For us it was a very difficult thing. To lose someone who knows exactly how we think and has been developed here, but opts for another club."

And Hummels is worried about what losing Gotze to Bayern Munich signifies.

"It is different when Shinji Kagawa left, or when Robert Lewandowski leaves us.

"In these cases it is understandable, because those players are not from Germany.

"The transfer of Mario is a sign that we do not have the respect given to the best four or five clubs in the world."

Borussia Dortmund could yet gain revenge of sorts against Bayern Munich for the Gotze raid, by beating the Bavarians in the Champions League final later this month.
