Barcelona playmaker Andres Iniesta has admitted that Real Madrid veteran Iker Casillas is going through a difficult situation at Los Blancos, after having failed to appear for his side since January.

Casillas, who has been with Los Blancos since 1990, has been overlooked by the Madrid giants since returning after recovering from his finger injury in April this year. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has preferred Diego Lopez to start between the sticks for his side.

Casillas was also benched during Real Madrid’s 4-3 win over Real Valladolid on Saturday.

“From the outside, it is difficult to understand his situation, especially when you consider what he represents and has done for Madrid”, Iniesta told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

“It is a difficult situation for him. Not only because he is not playing, but also because of everything else. I do not think it has got anything to do with a sporting issue, but everything off the field that you hear about."

The 31-year-old shot-stopper has contributed in helping Real Madrid win five La Liga titles in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, and 2012. Casillas also helped Los Blancos in achieving two Champions League titles in 2000 and 2002.
