The result ensures that Schalke finish fourth, joining Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and champions Bayern Munich in next season’s Champions League.

Elsewhere Bayern Munich rounded off their title-winning campaign in style by coming from 3-1 down to beat Borussia Monchengladbach 4-3 in what was also coach Jupp Heynckes’ final Bundesliga game in charge.

At the other end of the table Hoffenheim recorded a famous 2-1 win at Borussia Dortmund to move into the relegation playoff place, while Fortuna Dusseldorf lost 3-0 at Hannover, slipping below Hoffenheim and to direct relegation.
