Manchester City have announced an agreement with American baseball team the New York Yankees to own a Major League Soccer franchise.

“Manchester City Football Club are proud to announce, in partnership with the New York Yankees, the acquisition of the Major League Soccer’s 20th expansion club”, a club statement read.

The new franchise will be named New York City Football Club (NYCFC) and they are expected to start playing in the MLS from 2015.

“We proudly welcome two of the most prestigious professional global sports organisations to Major League Soccer”, MLS Commissioner Don Garber told the Manchester outfit’s official site.

“This is a transformational development that will elevate the league to new heights in this country.

“The New York area is home to more than 19 million people, and we look forward to an intense crosstown rivalry between New York City Football Club and the New York Red Bulls that will captivate this great city.”

The Yankees are one of the wealthiest and the best known teams in American sports. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the owner of Manchester City, will also become the latest foreign owner in the New York metropolitan area.

It is also thought that the Sky Blues will be the majority owner of the 20th MLS franchise, while the Yankees will own about a quarter of the team.

Manchester City play an exhibition match against Chelsea on Saturday at the Yankee Stadium in the New York City.
