Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has pointed out that despite Sir Alex Ferguson having a 26-year spell at Manchester United, he only managed to win two European Cups.

Ferguson managed to lead the Red Devils to Champions League glory in 1999 and then again in 2008. Real Madrid meanwhile won the coveted trophy in 1998, 2000 and 2002 over the period of the Scot’s reign at Old Trafford.

And this despite chopping and changing managers, unlike Manchester United.

Thus while Perez is not opposed to Ferguson style longevity, he does not feel it is guaranteed to bring the club greater European success.

“Do we want a Ferguson? I wish but, with all the love that I have [for him], he only won two European Cups in 26 years", Perez told a press conference, via Marca.

Real Madrid are currently on the lookout for a new coach, with incumbent Jose Mourinho set to depart after the final game of the season at the weekend.

Los Blancos will end this season without having won a major trophy, finishing as runners-up in La Liga, runners-up in the Copa del Rey and reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.
