Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has revealed that Jose Mourinho wanted him to return to Chelsea this summer, but was eventually persuaded that it was not the right time for the former Genk man to land back at Stamford Bridge.

Courtois has been on loan with Spanish side Atletico Madrid for two years and is set to stay at the Vicente Calderon for a further season, especially with Champions League football now on the agenda.

However, Courtois has revealed that recently appointed Chelsea manager Mourinho wanted him to cut short his Spanish adventure and return to his parent club.

And the goalkeeper had to have a frank discussion with Mourinho.

"It is important to stay as first choice for the World Cup", Courtois told Belgian broadcaster RTBF.

"Jose Mourinho telephoned me, he asked me what I wanted.

"Mourinho wanted me to come, but I will regret it for my whole life if I go to Brazil as understudy, if I miss a whole season with my club.

"Moreover, I have no experience in the Champions League. All this would allow me to continue to grow."

Courtois has consistently been concerned about returning to Chelsea to play second fiddle to Petr Cech, and with the Czech Republic international continuing as the club’s first choice, the Belgian is looking forward to more first team football at Atletico Madrid.
